Avelo Airlines Pulls the Plug on New RDU–Bahamas Route Weeks After Announcement

4 Min Read

Avelo Airlines has canceled its planned nonstop service between Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) and Nassau, Bahamas. The announcement comes just weeks after tickets for the new international route had gone on sale.

A short-lived expansion

The route was set to launch in June and was meant to be Avelo’s first international flight out of RDU. It was also pitched as a low-cost option for Triangle-area travelers looking to reach the Caribbean without a layover. But those plans have now been shelved indefinitely.

The airline hasn’t provided a detailed explanation for the sudden reversal. In a brief statement, Avelo cited “operational reasons” for the cancellation. No further details were given. All customers who had booked tickets will be issued full refunds, and the route has been removed from the booking system.

Refunds offered, but no timeline for return

Avelo says passengers affected by the cancellation will receive full refunds automatically. Those who booked through the airline directly do not need to take any action. There’s been no mention of whether the route might return later in the year or in 2026.

The airline’s brief communication left many travelers frustrated, especially those who had already made hotel or travel arrangements around the now-canceled flight. For some, this was supposed to be a convenient, direct connection to the Bahamas — something still relatively rare from mid-sized U.S. airports like RDU.

Impacts on RDU’s international ambitions

Raleigh-Durham International has been gradually expanding its international offerings, with flights to London, Paris, and other major hubs. The addition of Nassau was seen as a step toward adding more leisure-focused destinations. Avelo’s withdrawal isn’t a major setback for the airport’s overall international goals, but it is a reminder that not all new routes stick.

RDU officials declined to comment in detail but confirmed that the route had been removed from the airport’s active service list. They noted that route changes are not uncommon, especially when airlines are testing new markets.

Avelo’s broader strategy still in motion

Avelo Airlines entered the market as an ultra-low-cost carrier focused on underserved routes and secondary airports. It began operations at RDU in 2023 and has gradually expanded service to several domestic destinations, including Florida and the Northeast. The Nassau flight would have marked its first step into international territory from Raleigh.

The decision to cancel comes at a time when many low-cost carriers are reevaluating their route maps due to changing travel patterns, fuel costs, and pilot availability. Avelo is not alone in pulling back from planned expansions. Several other carriers have also trimmed schedules in recent months as the post-pandemic travel boom starts to level off.

What it means for local travelers

For now, travelers looking to fly nonstop from RDU to the Caribbean will have to look elsewhere. American Airlines still offers some direct connections to the region, though options remain limited. As for Avelo, its future international plans from RDU are unclear.

The company says it remains committed to serving the Raleigh-Durham region and will continue operating its existing domestic routes. But for international travel, it seems Triangle residents will have to wait a little longer — or book a connection.
