Spirit Airlines is making some low-key but meaningful changes to how it does business. Without abandoning its budget model, the carrier is working on cleaning up its image — and the experience passengers get from booking to boarding.
One area getting attention is the Free Spirit loyalty program. It’s been updated to feel more usable. Members now get clearer perks like free checked bags, earlier boarding, and seat choice without needing to hit elite levels that only a handful of travelers ever reach.
Spirit also says it’s trying to be more direct about what’s included in a ticket. For years, customers have complained about unexpected fees showing up late in the booking process. The airline is now promising to cut back on that kind of surprise, giving passengers a more upfront picture of what they’re paying for.
At the same time, Spirit is shifting some of its attention to airports that don’t get as much service from big-name carriers. Places like Pittsburgh are seeing more nonstop flights to mid-size cities. It’s a strategy that lets the airline stand out without always going head-to-head with the majors in high-traffic hubs.
Spirit’s not turning into a premium airline. The seats are still tight, and the snacks still cost extra. But the airline seems to understand that even low-cost passengers want predictability and respect. These changes don’t feel flashy, but they could make a difference where it counts.
