United Airlines Makes Its Polaris Lounge in Chicago Way Bigger-Here’s Why That Matters

3 Min Read

Polaris Lounge Gets a Serious Upgrade

United Airlines just went all-in on luxury at Chicago O’Hare. On Tuesday, they reopened their top-tier Polaris lounge, and get this-it’s now 50% bigger than before! We’re talking a massive 25,000 square feet in Terminal 1, with fancy Crate & Barrel furniture, a second speakeasy-style bar, and room for 350 guests. Oh, and they added six more restrooms and 50 dining seats, so good luck finding an excuse to complain.

Why All This Fuss?

The lounge is only for international travelers flying in United’s Polaris business class, so it’s definitely not your average airport lounge. United started this whole “Polaris” thing back in 2016, and now it’s kind of the gold standard for business-class travelers. The idea is to give high-rollers and frequent flyers a real reason to stick with United instead of jumping ship to American or Delta, who’ve both copied the whole two-tier lounge setup.

Airlines are in a bit of a race right now to win over wealthy travelers. Even though economy bookings are kind of meh this year, people are still willing to pay for premium seats and perks-especially if it means chilling in a lounge that feels more like a boutique hotel than an airport waiting room.

More Lounges on the Way

United isn’t stopping in Chicago. According to McMill, United’s managing director of hospitality programs (he talked to CNBC about it), the next Polaris lounge expansion is coming to Newark in June. They’re even working on plans for Denver. Apparently, last summer there were times when the Chicago lounge was packed to the brim, so making these lounges bigger has been in the works for a while.

On top of that, United’s also been tweaking its regular United Club lounges and adding smaller, quick-stop “Club Fly” spots in places like Houston, so travelers in a rush don’t have to deal with the crowds.

Bottom Line

United is betting big that travelers want more than just a comfy seat-they want a whole experience. If you’re flying Polaris, you’re in for a treat. And if you’re not? Well, maybe it’s time to start saving those miles.
