Air France is investing $1.1bn over five years to overhaul its La Première first-class proposition, combining changes to airport facilities, aircraft cabins and onboard connectivity as the French carrier targets wealthy travellers.

The programme is designed to extend the premium experience beyond the aircraft. La Première passengers can use a private car transfer to their aircraft, a dedicated airport entrance and discreet security checks before reaching a lounge offering spa treatments, caviar and champagne. On board, the service includes private suites, designer pyjamas and menus created by Michelin-starred chefs.

Investment spans ground services and aircraft

Air France’s plan covers several parts of the passenger journey rather than focusing solely on seat design. The carrier has spent the past five years refining its airport experience and suites, with improved WiFi also included in the new investment.

Fabien Pelous, Air France’s executive vice-president of customer experience, said the carrier’s aim was to move further into the premium market and reproduce some of the privacy associated with business aviation within a commercial service.

“We wanted to create the space like in a private jet,” Fabien Pelous said.

The cabin programme is additional to Air France’s wider fleet renewal spending, which the airline puts at a further $1.1bn annually. The separate figures distinguish the investment in the La Première experience from the carrier’s continuing expenditure on replacing and updating its aircraft.

Premium demand remains central to the strategy

Air France is pursuing the investment as airlines place greater emphasis on passengers prepared to pay for additional space, privacy and personalised service. The strategy is being advanced despite the pressure from rising fuel costs and economic uncertainty described in the report.

  • Return La Première tickets between Paris and New York start at just under $14,000.
  • The service includes private suites and a dedicated airport journey.
  • Air France was named the world’s best first-class carrier at this year’s Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The pricing places La Première well above the standard commercial travel market, while the service’s design seeks to offer a private-aviation-style experience without requiring passengers to charter an aircraft. Air France’s approach therefore combines a high-value cabin product with investment in the airport processes and onboard facilities that support it.
